Extension of study permit
When your current study permit expires, you need to apply for an extension of the study permit to continue studying.
Staying in Sweden
You should apply for an extension of your study permit if you are not planning on leaving Sweden while waiting for the decision.
For an extension application, it could take up to 7-8 months for a decision to arrive (depending on when you submit it).
Not in Sweden when the current permit expires
If you are planning on leaving Sweden for the summer or for an exchange semester and your Swedish residence permit will expire while you are not in Sweden, you should apply for a NEW study permit and not an extension because of the long processing time (especially during the summer months).
Two-year permit
If you are studying a 3-year bachelor programme and applied for a 13-month permit for your first permit, you can apply for a two-year study permit when you apply for an extension.
There are requirements to be granted a 2-year permit.
You must:
- be admitted to a 2-year master or 3-year bachelor programme
- have a valid passport for the duration of the 2-year permit
- have sufficient funds for living expenses for those two years.
There are also requirements to keep your study permit.
- registered for full-time studies each semester and
- complete sufficient number of credits each year with a study permit (according to the Migration Agency's requirements External link, opens in new window.)
