During a conference, researchers and lecturers from HLK gained a deeper understanding of the research field of educommunication. Speakers from Brazil, England, Denmark and Finland took us on an intellectual journey that became a starting point for our own work at JU.
Educommunication for everyone's right to education and everyone's right to be heard
In a continent with large class gaps, post-colonialism and dictatorship, several examples from Brazil were highlighted for how alternative accessible media have emerged to increase literacy, education and justice. The lecture was given by Professor Claudia Lago, University of São Paulo, Brazil.
Social justice with creative media methods
With several examples of collaboration in the Global South, where groups that have not had a voice are encouraged to lift each other up. In this case, Kenya and Brazil, who share a colonial history of human trafficking, but from opposite sides of the Atlantic. To highlight good examples with creative methods to give people without a voice, a voice, and to create commitment to change their and others' situation. The lecture was given by Dr. Andrea Medrado, University of Westminster, England.
Action competence as education
With learning through interaction and based on critical theory, the formation of the inner self was addressed through education to create citizens in a democratic society. To gain a platform for oneself and one's voice through education, whether it is to deal with one's own failures or to change the world. The lecture was given by Professor Venka Simovska, Aarhus University, Denmark.
Social sustainability in education and activism
Challenges of social sustainability in policy and higher education were highlighted here. With the UN Sustainable Development Goals in sight, we need to ask ourselves how to get there. Sustainable education should encourage and promote empowerment. It should be based on trust and take place through mutual teaching, learning and discovery. The lecture was given by Associate Professor Lili-Ann Wolff, University of Helsinki, Finland.
